Iron
Iron is essential for the proper growth and development of the human body. It helps metabolize proteins and plays a vital role in the production of haemoglobin and red blood cells.
Deficiency of dietary iron can lead to conditions like iron deficiency anaemia, chronic anaemia, cough and pre-dialysis anaemia. Green leafy vegetables, cereals, spinach, fish, meat, broccoli, legumes, soya beans and dry fruits are rich source of iron. Iron helps to transport oxygen through the blood stream by the means of haemoglobin.
Iron supplements are usually given for stronger immunity, to fight against infection, to treat body weakness and fatigue and especially during pregnancy.
Uses
Blood Building
Iron is the main component needed for the manufacture of haemoglobin, the pigment accounting for the colour of red blood cells. Haemoglobin is comprised of an iron compound combined with a protein, and is the means by which oxygen is transported through the body.
Utilization of Oxygen
It also helps to utilize oxygen in muscle by means of myoglobin, a pigment which functions in the muscles in a similar manner as haemoglobin does in the blood. Myoglobin allows muscle cells to retain oxygen.
Essential Coenzyme
Iron is also an essential constituent of many enzymes required for proper health.
Precautions
Please consult your GP if you are already taking any other medication.
