Painful menstruation is one of the most common female complaints, affecting more than 50% of women all around the world. It is also called dysmenorrhoea in medical terminology. Period pain occurs when the muscular wall of the womb contracts. This leads to constriction of blood vessel hence, less oxygen supply to womb, and this in turn releases prostaglandins – the hormone secreted by uterine lining, which then triggers pain in the body.
Period pain also gets worse with underlying digestive conditions such as constipation. There are many over the counter painkillers that can used to treat the condition. Moreover, nutritional and holistic approaches are also beneficial for the treatment of period pain.
